OMF V8C128 An Opportunity to Change His Fate

Duan Ming nodded, feeling that this decision was really the right one. “I think that makes a lot of sense. Just take your time. You find whatever you want to do soon enough. There’s no need to rush into anything. Anyway …” He turned to Lan Ling, raising his brows. “How about we go to the heavenly officials to make things clear here to let brother Zhong settle into the room first?”

Lan Ling actually seemed a little reluctant as if he had wanted to stay behind but after he thought of Duan Ming’s glance, he finally nodded. “Well, if you insist, then I guess I’ll accompany you.” He nodded toward Jing Yi and turned around, walking away with his head held high.

Duan Ming sighed and turned back to Jing Yi. “Don’t take it to heart. Lan Ling is … well, he’s always like this. You’ll see in the future. Now, we’ll take care of all the organizational matters for you so you won’t have to worry about that. I’ll come and tell you when everything is finished. You just take your time here.”

“Thank you very much.” Jing Yi cupped his fists again and then waited for Duan Ming to leave as well.

As soon as the steps had receded in the distance, Qiu Ling was back at his side. “You don’t really intend to stay here, do you? Then what if the God of Justice —”

Jing Yi shook his head at him and went back into the room, waiting for him to follow. He sat down at the table and then gave Qiu Ling a pointed look. “I know what you want to say but I do indeed intend to stay here. I want my own life. That is what we came here for in the first place, wasn’t it? Now, we’ve made our way over here and it’s natural for the people in this courtyard to stay here and live here as well. This is what I want to do.”

Qiu Ling’s expression still wasn’t too good. He sat down opposite him, a little tensed. “Then I’ll move in with you.”

To his surprise, Jing Yi shook his head. “No, you shouldn’t do that. You’ve seen it already: Duan Ming recognized you as the dragon king. And I’m pretty sure that he is in the know about who the dragon king is engaged to.”

Qiu Ling’s expression turned rather awkward. Well, he definitely couldn’t deny that. In any case, while he had usually sneaked in to see Jing He, they had still spent some time openly with each other and he had always proclaimed that he was going to marry him if he was asked. Sometimes, he had even done so when he wasn’t asked.

The fact that the dragon king was intent on marrying the Son of Heaven was definitely something that most people in the Nine Heavens knew. He didn’t know who exactly this Duan Ming was but he was quite sure that he was somebody who would know about that relationship if he could recognize him at a glance. So yes, if Jing Yi did not want to be seen as Jing He’s reincarnation again, then he definitely couldn’t stay with him.

Even though Qiu Ling understood that, he also wasn’t willing to back down that easily. “And what if you are attacked? This would be a prime opportunity for them to get rid of you.”

Jing Yi shook his head though. “If they tried, they would put a lot of attention on the fact of who I am. That isn’t something that they want. So unless they send some heavenly guards to seize me and bring me somewhere else to kill me, they wouldn’t do it. And if they did something like that, you would find out immediately. So it’s not like I’m really in more trouble here as I would be at your side.”

Qiu Ling unfortunately had to admit that his beloved was right. “Well, I’ll still stay close by!”

Jing Yi once again shook his head. “Please don’t. I don’t mind if you come to visit and I can also come and visit you. But you can’t hang around here the whole time. You’ve seen how Lan Ling reacted to you. That almost made things unsalvageable for me. So please, just give me a bit of space.” In any case, he usually wouldn’t ask for anything like this. But he felt clearly that this was his only chance of getting a normal life in the Nine Heavens. “I’m not saying that this has to be forever but at least for the first stretch of time, I think it would be better if you stayed away more. After a while, we can find some kind of regular way to deal with this. I just don’t want them to know that … well.”

Qiu Ling furrowed his brows. He felt that Jing Yi was a little distant right now. He wasn’t quite sure why but it gave him a feeling of crisis. He really wanted to argue so that Jing Yi wouldn’t send him away but he also knew that it wouldn’t change anything. Their circumstances just were like that.

He fell quiet and then rubbed his head. “Well, I can’t change your mind. Then after those two return, I will leave. Just promise me that you will stay around them. That Duan Ming and that Lan Ling shouldn’t be weak. And since they know Leng Jin Yu and now that you are acquainted with him as well, they should also want to do you a favor and keep you safe.”

Jing Yi nodded. “I know. Don’t worry too much. In any case, it is my own life that relies on this. I definitely won’t play around.” No, he absolutely wouldn’t. In fact, this was a prime opportunity to change his fate. Qiu Ling could protect him but not always. Thus, he had to learn to do so himself. And where would he do that if not here?
