IRL C67 Try Something Risky

Ao Jing glanced at Shangguan Yu next to him, wishing that there was something he could do. His boyfriend looked downright terrified at this point but no matter what he said, it wouldn’t change anything. He also didn’t know how to get out of this situation.

“Do you think we’ll manage to get rid of them?” Shangguan Yu also looked over, his hands clamping around the hem of his shirt. He felt so helpless. If only there was something, anything that he could do to support Ao Jing right now … But unfortunately, he could do nothing other than sitting here and worry.

Ao Jing slightly furrowed his brows and glanced at the rearview mirror again. “It doesn’t look like it. And if we just continue to drive around aimlessly, I’m afraid that I’ll run out of gas sometime soon. We have to come up with another plan.”

“But what? We can’t outdistance them by speed alone and we haven’t really been lucky with any traffic lights. They’re never lagging too far behind. Even if we manage to get away for a short time, they still catch up to us in no time at all.”

Ao Jing nodded. Unfortunately, that was true. It had happened several times since they had made sure that this car was indeed following them. He tapped the steering wheel, took a deep breath, and then exhaled slowly. “Well, I guess we can only try to go about this in a roundabout way then.”

He once again glanced at the rearview mirror but the car was still there. “Can you reach out to somebody from your family or a friend that can drive? Someone that would be available to meet up with us right now?”

Shangguan Yu wasn’t quite sure what he wanted to do but he still pulled out his phone and went through his contacts. “I could try to call my brother-in-law.”

Ao Jing nodded. “Do that. If he can meet up with us, then maybe the person will back off when they see that there is somebody else involved now. And if not …” He shook his head. “Well, at least by splitting up, they can only go after one of us.”

Shangguan Yu furrowed his brows, not happy with that suggestion. But he also didn’t know what else to do. “Well, let me call him first.” Maybe it would be enough to deter that person as long as they stopped and another car appeared next to them. It was worth a try. And anyway, it wasn’t like they had much of a choice.

He called Yu Lan, listening to the dial tone on the other side with his heart beating madly.

Back in the other car, Yu Lan almost made the car swerve to the side when his phone suddenly went off and showed his brother-in-law as the caller-ID. He grimaced and then took the call. “Xiao Yu … What’s the matter?” He tried to sound nonchalant as if he wasn’t secretly following them at all.

Shangguan Yu kept quiet for a moment, not quite sure how to explain. Then, he noticed the sound of the engine on the other side of the phone. “Are you outside right now?”

Yu Lan grimaced once again. So much for trying not to let his brother-in-law notice. If he couldn’t come up with anything, he might be busted in a minute! “Er … Yeah.” He cleared his throat and then tried to throw in an excuse. “I am on my way to a meeting with a client right now. Did you want something?”

Shangguan Yu smiled wryly. A client, huh? In that case, he probably couldn’t disturb him. “No, if you’re busy, then forget about it.”

Yu Lan raised his brows and then couldn’t help but narrow his eyes at the car in front of him. Could it be that his brother-in-law needed help? “Is your date not going well?”

Shangguan Yu sighed at that. It had gone awesomely well before this but who could have thought that something crazy like this would happen? It was such a pity! Still, he didn’t want to worry his brother-in-law if he had an important meeting up ahead. “No … That’s not it. I was just wondering about something but it’s not important if you don’t have any time. We can talk in the evening. Anyway, I don’t want to disturb you any longer. Bye!”

He hung up and then lowered his phone with a sigh. “My brother-in-law is at work. I don’t dare to disturb him. I’m afraid I don’t know anybody else who could come and meet us though. My sister knows how to drive but I really don’t know if it would be good to involve her of all people. As for the friends I still know from here …” He shook his head. “I think most of them wouldn’t even be in town.”

Ao Jing nodded, once again tapping the steering wheel. “Well, it was worth a try. Since it didn’t work out … we will have to do something else.” He looked around and then finally motioned at the next intersection. “Let’s get away from the traffic. We can try to get ahead a bit, park somewhere around the corner and then surprise whoever it is. It might be a bit dangerous but I’m afraid we won’t be able to get rid of them if we don’t try anything riskier.”

Shangguan Yu felt worried but he still nodded. “You’re right. I’m afraid that’s the only thing we can actually do. Let’s go for it.”

Ao Jing gave a grim nod and then turned just as he had said before accelerating in the next road, widening the distance between them and the other car. Unfortunately, whoever was following them sped up as well. They only had a short amount of time to set this up.

Turning into an alley with the wheels screeching, Ao Jing hurriedly opened the door and motioned outside. “You run down the street for a bit and find a place to hide. I’ll jump the guy.”

Shangguan Yu hesitated but Ao Jing hurriedly pushed him in the other direction. “Go! If I can’t take him alone, you can come out and try to help. Or you could call the police if it looks like the two of us can’t take the person even together. Anyway, there’s no use in both of us getting hurt.” He hurriedly kissed Shangguan Yu’s temple and then once again pushed him in the other direction.

Shangguan Yu gulped but then nodded and finally ran away. He promised himself that he wouldn’t leave Ao Jing alone though. He would definitely make sure that nothing happened to him.
