Blue butterfly grimaced when she heard that. “I took a look at the chasm when I accompanied Zhi Guan to forge the weapon for his junior martial brother there. It does seem like it is expanding in all directions. It’s slow but sooner or later …” She shook her head.
White jade’s expression turned solemn. He had indeed feared this for a long time but just as he had said, there was nothing to be done. “Even so, it doesn’t change our circumstances. We can try to find a way to deal with this later on. For now, we should focus on the war.”
Blue butterfly nodded but her expression still stayed worried. The chasm … it was the one place she feared. So even if they could think of something, she wasn’t sure how helpful she would be.
White jade turned back to Mei Chao Bing. “Either way, for now, the array is safe. As for your guess in regard to the abilities being linked to the cultivation techniques of the founders, I can’t say for sure. From what I’m aware of, the techniques were mostly meant to sustain the array.”
Mei Chao Bing furrowed his brows. “Sect Master Zhang indicated something similar but I’m not sure if I understand it completely. Doesn’t continued cultivation use up spiritual energy? How does that serve the array?”
“Well …” White jade pondered how to explain this.
Before he found the right idea, the black warrior interrupted. “You saw the platform I was on, right? The one made from stone with the lines on top?”
Mei Chao Bing turned to him, nodded, and gave a hum. “I did.”
“That is the actual cornerstone and that is where the energy comes from. It is a … point of exchange.”
White jade nodded. He had thought Mei Chao Bing didn’t know about that so he hadn’t known how to explain it in a way that he could grasp easily. But if he had already seen the platform, then it was alright. “Right! Basically, what happens is that the energy from that person is drained, guided through the array, and periodically ejected after it gathers in one of the platforms you saw. There are four of them, one in each sect so at all four places, the energy is released slowly and in a controlled manner.”
Mei Chao Bing gave a hum. He got the general concept even though he didn’t know the details. “But that isn’t linked to any abilities at all.”
White jade sighed. “Yes, so that is where I doubt I have good news for you: From my understanding, the cultivation techniques were created to assist the array. Each of them plays to a feature the array has: Our Li Ren Sect’s technique strengthens the build of the array itself by fortifying the lines, your Teng Yong Sect’s technique supports the flow of the energy, the Zhen Yan Sect’s technique allows for repair where it might be ruptured, and the Jian Chu Sect’s technique connects all places. Any abilities that might have had to do with this … they don’t really play a part in it.”
Mei Chao Bing furrowed his brows. Had he really gotten all of it wrong? He sighed when he realized that this was likely the case. “Seems like I wasted everyone’s time here. I had hoped this could tell us something but it seems it simply made matters more confusing with no benefit at all.”
At that moment, Shen Lei clicked his tongue, making everyone glance over. He raised his hands, his brows faintly raising. “Maybe there’s some benefit after all. At least, I think I had an idea. If it were to work, we could solve two of our big issues at the same time.”
White jade raised a brow. “Which issues are you talking about?”
Shen Lei pointed to the map. “The issues with the southern chasm threatening that array and also the current war. Call me crazy but how about using one to do the other?”
The others tilted their heads, clearly not getting it.
Shen Lei could only smile wryly. He wasn’t sure if this could work but … he sure hoped so. He pointed at the magical box that Mei Chao Bing was still holding after explaining earlier. “You said that box could be filled with any type of energy until it’s full, right?”
Mei Chao Bing nodded. “Yes, that’s what Yun Bei Fen’s second senior martial brother said at least.”
Shen Lei gave a hum. “I know Yan Hong Min. He seems unreliable but his inventions are good. A bit too good sometimes. The amount of energy that thing can store is likely to be off the charts. If the type really doesn’t matter, then why not go to the southern chasm and take some of that energy? Even if it can only reduce a part, that’d help with reducing the threat a little as well, right?” He turned to blue butterfly since she had last seen the chasm.
“Uh …” Blue butterfly could only stutter though and instead turned to Tong Chen. “What do you think?”
The black warrior thought for a moment and then nodded. “It should be worth a try. If the energy can be stored, that would be good. If not, nothing is lost. In the best case, this would also be a strong attack against the other side.”
Shen Lei gave a hum. “That was my thought process as well. I don’t know how exactly it’ll work out but knowing Yan Hong Min, there shouldn’t be much of a problem.”
Mei Chao Bing nodded. “I’m willing to try it, at least. The question would be how to make the most use of this. With the other tools senior martial brother Yan has given me, we already have a little advantage. If I were to release this though … I don’t think our disciples would get out of it unharmed either.”
Baili Chao sighed. “That’s really always the problem with my second disciple’s inventions, isn’t it? There is always some kind of drawback.”
Well, when it came to that, Mei Chao Bing couldn’t deny it.
