Soon enough, everything in the room had been arranged, the place to flee to had been found, and the disciples were instructed and ready as well. The Elders verified one last time that each of them knew what they had to do and then turned to Shen Lei and Luo Lin.
Diao Huan couldn’t help but caution them again. “Make sure you don’t take too much of a risk. Don’t stay too long. Only let them see you and then rush inside as if you are the ones on the lookout.” He still wasn’t all that comfortable with two disciples being the ones to do this but he understood the need for it. Thus, he could only make sure that he had done everything he could to ensure that they would make it out of this without being harmed.
Shen Lei nodded patiently. “We will. Elder Diao doesn’t need to worry.” To be fair, he wasn’t too worried. Not about the first part of this plan, at least. As for the latter … it’d depend. But he couldn’t explain these things clearly so he could only reassure the Elder again. “We should go now. They could be here at any time.”
Luo Lin turned to look at his Master and nodded before turning away and leaving the hall with his fiance, tightly holding his hand. He wasn’t worried. No matter what happened, this time, they were at least together. He wouldn’t have to stay back and worry or receive the news that something had happened to Shen Lei while he was alone outside. No, they would go through this together, no matter what came.
The two of them made their way further into the building. They had disabled the other arrays that they didn’t want to use themselves so they didn’t have to worry that anyone would sneak in that way. As for where exactly the demonic practitioners would come from … they actually didn’t know but the entrances were all on the other side of the building so waiting somewhere around there or patrolling the possible area was the obvious answer.
They started to stroll through the hallways, tightly holding each other’s hand. The one prerequisite to make sure they wouldn’t risk their lives doing this task was being able to use Luo Lin’s ability. But because of that, they couldn’t get separated at all. If they did … well, they’d be up against a horde of demonic practitioners with no easy way out. Of course, the danger of such a situation could be imagined.
Soon enough, Shen Lei stopped in his steps. He turned toward the direction of the main entrance, his expression tense.
“Are they here?”
“Seems like it.” Shen Lei narrowed his eyes and focused on the feedback he received from his spiritual sense. There was definitely a group of people, even though he couldn’t say how many there were overall.
Next to him, Luo Lin pulled out the paper duck and imbued some spiritual energy to inform the others. “It seems they’re here. They haven’t spotted us yet though.”
On the other side, Elder Baili sighed. “Be careful.” Even with that ability, this wasn’t a certain thing at all. After all, they didn’t know if the other side didn’t have a way to counter abilities. Especially with Luo Lin’s dreamscape being a copy of Blue Butterfly’s ability, he might be in danger if he relied on it too much. But, well, there was no better way and it was too late to change anything now.
Luo Lin kept the connection up so his Master could hear if there were other news but didn’t speak. Shen Lei knew more about these things so he’d be able to give better information.
Shen Lei glanced at him and gave a reassuring smile. He wasn’t sure if Luo Lin was afraid. On the one hand, they were together which might make this less scary. There was also the ability to fall back on. But then, this was the most dangerous mission he had ever been on. In fact, he hadn’t been on that many so it might be overwhelming. “I’m here.”
He squeezed his hand and then gently pulled him along, picking up the route they had picked for their patrol again. This way, if they finally stumbled upon that group, they’d know which path to follow back. Considering that they weren’t as familiar with this place as the demonic faction, that was the only way to guarantee they wouldn’t be forced into a dead end.
While walking, he continuously monitored the situation around them and what he could perceive of the group. As he did, his brows tightly furrowed though. “They’re moving awfully slow. They might be expecting a trap or looking for something.”
“That doesn’t sound good.” Elder Diao’s voice immediately sounded from the other side. “Have they spotted you yet?”
“I don’t think so. At least so far, they aren’t moving specifically in our direction.” They were, however, moving further inward. Most likely, they were looking for them but didn’t dare to simply rely on their spiritual sense. What if someone had a spiritual item to cover their tracks or even those of a group, after all? When a big battle was imminent, it was only prudent to assume that the other side would pull out all stops and take out the big weapons. You shouldn’t rashly approach anyone. Even if they only seemed to be two people on patrol, there was always a risk.
Shen Lei fell silent and only tugged at Luo Lin’s hand. What went for the other side, naturally also went for them: They couldn’t be sure that there weren’t any demonic practitioners already around them. Thus, they had to be especially careful. “Let’s get closer to get a glimpse of the group. As soon as we have a rough idea of their numbers: Run!”
Luo Lin nodded and interlaced his fingers with Shen Lei before following him silently, his own spiritual sense revealing information to him as well.
