With the king’s family gone, Xiang Yong glanced at the generals as well and sighed lightly. “I know this is a lot and all of it is coming at once. I can only implore you to do as the previous king has said and take some time to think it through. His Majesty is preoccupied with his wedding today but I am sure he will be happy to answer any remaining questions tomorrow.”
Of course, ‘happy’ was likely the wrong word to use. Their king had finally managed to snatch the beauty and get married. Most likely, even though he had turned into a more conscientious version of himself again, he’d love to take a few days at least to completely remain in a two-person world. Dealing with tricky political situations was likely very low on his list of priorities right now. But then, he certainly wouldn’t say that in front of the generals.
Xiang Yong forced himself to give a faint smile and rose to his feet. “I should also get back to work now. There are a lot of people outside and something could always come up. You may stay here if you’d like but you are also invited to join us back outside.” With that, he inclined his head toward the generals and left. Anyway, everything else aside, he still needed to check how Fu Min had dealt with the previous issue.
Fu Heng glanced at the door. His husband was still outside so, naturally, he’d also like to follow and go back there. But then, his relationship with the generals was the closest so he knew he couldn’t shirk his responsibility now.
He turned to look at everyone and finally gave a hum. “You’ve heard it. Is there anything you’d like me to add?”
Shou Quan immediately raised her hand.
Fu Heng looked at her, feeling that he wouldn’t like what came next. Shou Quan was definitely great as a general but sometimes … well, she could be a bit much. In a way, she was similar to Fu Min but without the benefit of being the person he loved. Well, in this case, he had offered to explain so he could hardly say no now. In the end, he could only force down his worry and raise his brows. “What is it?”
“So, am I getting this right? The previous king was in love with His Majesty’s father but His Majesty’s father liked someone else who married him but it turns out that she was actually in love with someone from the demon race?” Honestly, she didn’t even know how to explain this whole matter to her wife!
Fu Heng blinked his eyes and started to wonder why his king’s family had to be so complicated. “That … should be about it? Although I believe the previous king and His Majesty’s father had mutual feelings. Something just happened in the middle.”
The generals were usually serious but, admittedly, most of them also loved to gossip. This was even more true in this case when their own king was concerned. After all, most of them hailed him as a hero, and who didn’t want to know everything they could about their hero?
Chang Bo glanced at Shou Quan and seeing that she looked pensive but wasn’t asking further, he couldn’t help but ask himself. “So, what exactly happened? If they liked each other, why not get married?”
The others didn’t say anything but most couldn’t help but think that if they had, then today’s issue wouldn’t even exist. Oh, how awesome it would be if their king was the son of the previous king! Although then again, it might be difficult to accede to the throne in that case. After all, the title of the dragon realm’s sovereign wasn’t hereditary. Letting your own child become the next ruler wasn’t easy. They weren’t sure if there had ever been a single sovereign in such a situation.
Fu Heng only looked at Chang Bo with a blank look. “That’s their private matter. How would I know? You’d have to ask His Majesty tomorrow.”
Chang Bo only pursed his lips. As if he’d dare to ask their king about his father’s love affair! If he did, would he bother asking Fu Heng today? It was a pity that he was so stubborn and wouldn’t tell them. His wife would probably scold him for not even getting the most important details straight.
Fang Hua wasn’t as direct as those two but she also had to admit that she was quite curious about the current situation more than anything. “Love matters aside, what’s your opinion on all this? How long have you known?”
Fu Heng felt a bit troubled but he didn’t dare to lie to his generals. “Not that long, to be honest. As the previous king said, this is something that is also difficult for His Majesty. Even we as his advisers weren’t told for a long time. He only mentioned it after the crown prince of the Nine Heavens had been told.”
The generals looked at him in doubt. The crown prince of the Nine Heavens? Well, it made sense to tell his lover but …
“Didn’t they only meet a decade or so ago?” Even Jia Su couldn’t keep quiet at this point.
Fu Heng inclined his head. “I do know that An Bai and Xiang Yong were aware of it before Fu Min and I but it probably wasn’t much sooner. I … can understand, although I wish he had been able to trust me with this. I admit I was also surprised but I trust him.” He looked at the generals one after the other again, his gaze finally stopping at Min Jun. “I know it’s hard. We have always fought the demons and even with the half-bloods, we were careful because we felt we could never know. But all these years, he has supported us and this kingdom. I dare not say he isn’t the king I wish to have for our people, irrespective of where his blood is inherited from.”
