Back in the Heavenly Emperor’s palace, only Rong Su, Bai Fen, and Qiang Yan were left. The two siblings exchanged a glance and Qiang Yan hastily cleared his throat.
“Well, if the dragons are going to bring guards, we’d better strengthen our own efforts as well. If anything happens to the dragon king on our territory, it would be a disaster.” He raised his brows and then motioned to the door. “I … I’ll go and deal with it right now.” With those words, he already turned on his heels and rushed out.
Bai Fen waited for the gate to close before turning to her husband and then motioned over to the study. “Let’s go and sit.”
Rong Su still had a lot to say about what had just happened but his wife’s expression was too serious. He didn’t dare to say a single word of complaint and instead followed her hurriedly, sitting down at the table opposite her.
Bai Fen didn’t give her husband any chance to utter his grievances at this time either. “Rong Su, I hope you can put your personal opinion aside for the time being.” She raised her brows, keeping a close eye on his expression. “I know you have always had the conviction that you know best. Whether it is about the Nine Heavens, our family, or Jing He, you believe that nothing will go wrong as long as it is left in your hands.”
In fact, this was one of the main gripes she had with her husband. Back then, after she had married him, he hadn’t told her some things because he never considered that he should get her input. Instead, he made those decisions by himself and when things came out later, he only begrudgingly apologized.
Jing He’s marriage … it was very similar to that. Clearly, their son had fallen in love with somebody but that person wasn’t accepted by her husband. He had a different vision of who his future son-in-law should be even if there wasn’t a suitable candidate in sight. He only knew that it wasn’t this person so he refused to accept things as they were and pretended that his son’s feelings didn’t exist.
He likely told himself that even if they did, they would fade over time and Jing He would accept his arrangements. He didn’t care that he was hurting his son by doing this. Most likely, he believed that as long as some time passed, that pain would fade from his memory just like his feelings and he would be happy with the one he set him up with.
For some time, it was alright to pretend that things were like that. For some time, he could look the other way. Until the point when Jing He had fallen in love, it had mattered little. Even after that, they didn’t necessarily have to act immediately. After all, it was indeed best if Jing He was sure about his decision.
But the time to wait had passed. The time to pretend that they could make any arrangements about their son’s future love life was a thing of the past. Now, they had to face the truth and accept things as they were. She didn’t mind but her husband … it would likely not be easy to convince him. She wouldn’t give up though. This was the only chance they had to get their son back. She absolutely wouldn’t let her husband ruin it.
Her expression turned even more solemn. “You have seen that in this case, that belief doesn’t hold true. Jing He has fallen.”
Rong Su pursed his lips. “Neither of us has seen him. It’s just what that dandy from the dragon realm is saying.”
Bai Fen ignored the jab at the dragon king and kept focusing on the issue at hand. “Then you tell me what else happened and where our son currently is. Who is the one who took him? If you can’t figure it out, then I’d rather believe in what Longjun told us. No matter whether you like him or not, you have to admit that from beginning to end, his words make sense.”
Rong Su huffed. “How do they? Tian saving our son? I don’t think so. That man hates my family. Why would he go and take Jing He? He’d be happy if he fell and we’d have to kill him!”
Bai Fen stared at her husband, not sure how to react for a moment. This was indeed the one matter she wasn’t sure about. Yes, why had Tian saved their child? Thinking about it, there only seemed to be one explanation. “You also know that the soul of Tian’s son is supposed to reincarnate in your family. Have you never thought that maybe Jing He is the one? The real Son of Heaven?”
Rong Su froze. In fact … he hadn’t. He believed that his son was perfect all around with nothing left to wish for but … he still didn’t think that he was the reincarnation of Tian’s child. He didn’t want him to be either. To be honest, while he disliked the dragon king, those feelings were nothing compared to the bone-deep hatred he felt for Tian.
And how could he not? He had grown up under the curse on his family, his childhood filled with danger. Then, after finally coming of age and being free of the curse, it didn’t take long for him to marry Bai Fen and have to worry about it again. In the end, it was this curse which killed his daughter and tormented his son. How could he not hate the one who placed it on them?
His son being the reincarnated soul of that man’s child … he’d rather not think about such a possibility. Unfortunately, with Bai Fen bringing it up now, he couldn’t help but ponder the likelihood though. In fact … it didn’t seem impossible. After all, it had been so long since the curse was placed on everyone and there really was nothing to complain about in regard to his son. From his looks to his personality, where was Jing He not perfect? It would make sense for his soul to be the same as Tian’s child and if this was the case, then that would indeed explain why Tian would take the pain to save Jing He when he fell.
